Geneanet.org - Internetsökningar

I Legacy finns det några få fördefinierade Geneanet sök-profiler för sökningar på engelska, franska och holländska. Dessa sökningar är enkla sökningar som kan omstruktureras beroende på dina behov.

What is Généanet

Généanet is a website that holds more than 700.000 family trees mostly of European families. They also have lots of BDM databases, collections and library's.

Généanet offers free and Premium (paid) access. A subscription is not needed. Publishing a family tree is free and can easily be done starting from a GEDCOM file produced by Legacy.

From the Généanet website you can search for ancestors by the individual, his or her spouse(s) and parents. Based on surname, given names, places, date of events and presence of one or more parent very complex and specific searches can be made. These search possibilities are not available for all users (only the Premium Users), but even if you're not subscribed to Généanet you can get significant result based upon the free options.

This topic tries to explain how the search string is made and how to personalize your search to your own needs.

Structure of the predefined search strings:

The search string configured into Legacy for the French results look like this:

These searches are based on information of the chosen individuals. It uses the Surname, Given Names, a Start Year (mostly date of birth/Christening) and EndYear (mostly Death/Burial or 90 years after the StartYear)

Detailed view of the predefined fields 

• http://www.geneanet.org/fonds/individus/?go=1 : 
• Start and URL of the website with the instruction that the search must be executed with the following parameters
• &nom=[Surname]&with_variantes_nom=on - String for searching for the Surname of the individual. Variants of the surname will also be searched (for instance for "Huffman" the results of "Coffman, Haoffmann, Hufmans, Hoffmanl, ect... will also be shown)
• &prenom=[GivenNames]&with_variantes_prenom=on - String for searching for the Given Names of the individual. All results of any of the given names will be shown. Variants of the surname will also be searched (For instance for "Jane" the results of "Jaenne, Jeannes, Gioanna, Jhane, ...  will also be shown)
• &size=20 - This determines how many results must be shown per webpage. In this case maximum 20 persons per webpage.
• &type_periode=between&from=[StartYear]&to=[EndYear] - This limits the results to persons with events within the range StartYear and EndYear
• &all_variantes=on - This parameter makes Généanet search within all variants possible of the given parameters

Note: Généanet search works optimally for Premium users, but the functions that are reserved for Premium users will not inhibit the free users to see results. These results however will not be based on all parametrs. For instance the "variants" parameter is one of the parameters reserved to Premium users.

Personalizing the Généanet search

• First important preliminary note: There are more fields available for the search string. The names of the parameters may be translated on your screen into the language which Legacy uses (Toolbar Options -> Choose Language). However only the English parameter descriptions may be used in the URL string. This help page will show both the parameter in your chosen language and in English. Please only use the English description!
• Second important preliminary note: We do suggest not to change the predefined Internet Searches but to make a new one or copy an existing Internet Search to one with another name.
• [FirstName] (English [FirstName]). Only search for the first given name. When only searching for the first name you will probably get more, but less accurate, results. This part of the string is changed into : &prenom=[FirstNames]&with_variantes_prenom=on 
• Start searching starting before a certain year - Do change the type period from "between" to "before" and only give an end date. In Legacy you have 4 year fields that you can use ([BirthYear], [DeathYear], [StartDate], [EndYear]). Although you can use any year in the string the best choice will be [DeathYear] or [EndYear]

This part of the string is changed into : &type_periode=before&from=&to=[EndYear]

• Search starting from a certain year - Do change the type period from "between" to "after" and only give a start date. In Legacy you have 4 year fields that you can use ([BirthYear], [DeathYear], [StartDate], [EndYear]). Although you can use any year in the string the best choice will be [BirthYear] or [StartYear]

Finetuning your search on the Généanet website

Since Legacy does not support all possibilities (and certainly not all possibilities for the Premium users) further changes can be made on the Généanet website itself after having initiated the search from Legacy. 

Free users can add: Surnames and GivenNames to exclude & country/regions.

Premium users can add and filter much more. The possibilities are shown on the website.
