Displaying and Editing Pictures in Legacy

To see an enlarged view of a picture, highlight it on the Media Gallery screen, click the Options button, and then choose Edit. The picture is loaded into the Display Picture window. From here you can add a caption, date and description to the picture. You can also change pictures attributes such as brightness, sharpness and contrast and rotate and zoom the picture.

Sound - If you have a sound file attached to a picture or attached as a stand-alone file, you can play it by first clicking in the caption area under the picture and then choosing Options > Play.
Loading a Picture - To load a picture into the Display Picture window, click the Load New... button. The Load Picture dialog box appears where you can specify the picture file you want to view. As you scroll through the available picture files, they are displayed in the right-hand window so you can make sure you are selecting the right one. Click OK when you have found the desired picture.
Color versus Black and White - Legacy supports the displaying and printing of both color and black and white pictures. Color pictures can be converted to gray scale (black and white) by clicking To Gray Scale. This is often necessary if you are printing reports with pictures on a non-color printer such as a laser printer. Color pictures sent to a black and white printer often come out either looking dark and muddy or washed out.
Supported Formats - Legacy supports the loading, displaying and converting of the following picture file formats:

Bitmap .BMP

PCX .PCX

Tiff .TIF

PICT .PCT

JPEG .JPG

Zooming In and Out - Use the Zoom In and Zoom Out buttons to vary the magnification of the picture. To adjust the size to exactly fit in the window, click Fit in Window. To view the picture at 100%, its actual size, click 100%. To zoom into a particular area of a picture, click Zoom Area and then drag the mouse cursor over the area you want to magnify. When you release the button, the area within the drag rectangle is enlarged to fit the window.
Converting to a Different Format - After loading a picture, you can save it again in a different format. Click Save As... The Save Picture dialog box appears. Click on the Down Arrow on the Save File as Type combo box. Select the file format you want to convert to and then enter a file name. Click OK to complete the conversion.
Editing a Picture - There are several attributes of a picture that can be permanently changed. These include brightness, sharpness, contrast, rotation and color.
Brightness, Sharpness and Contrast - Pictures which look blurry, dull or washed out can be touched up to improve their appearance. Click Display Attributes to see the Adjust Display Attributes window. Adjust the brightness, sharpness and contrast controls and click Apply to see the effect on the picture. When you are happy with the changes, click OK.
Rotating, Flipping and Flopping - You can rotate the picture in 90 degree increments by clicking Rotate 90 Deg. This may be necessary if a picture was scanned sideways or upside down.

Click Flip to reverse a picture from left to right. Click Flop to reverse from top to bottom.

Converting to Gray Scale - You can quickly convert a color picture to black and white by clicking To Gray Scale.
Reloading a Picture - Sometimes the changes you make to a picture make it look worse rather than better. If you make changes to a picture that you don't want to keep, you can click Reload Original to reload the original picture from disk.
Attaching Sound Files - You can add a sound file to the current picture. To begin the process, click the Sound button.
Cropping Pictures - If you want to select a portion of a picture and then crop it to only show that area, click the Crop button. The mouse cursor changes to a crosshair. Select the desired portion of the picture by dragging the cursor over it. As soon as you release the mouse button, the rest of the picture disappears leaving only the selected rectangle. If you want to change the position or size of the selection, click the Fit button to restore the original picture and try again. When you are satisfied that the selected portion is the only part you want to keep, click the Trim button. The picture then grows to fill the screen. It has been cropped but it has not been saved yet. If you want to start over again, click the Reload Original button. If you want to keep the cropped picture you must save it. Click the Save As button and choose a name and location. Don't save it over the original picture unless you don't want the original anymore.
Saving the Changes - When you have made changes that you want to keep, you must save the picture to disk. Click Save As... and save the picture to whatever format you desire. This can be to the same format and file name as the original or to either a different name or format, or both.
